Registered Charity No. 1086651
The Challenger Class Association is a charity that is registered in the U.K. and exists to represent the interests of Challenger sailors, most of whom have some form of disability. They are all people who want an outdoor life and an adventure pastime that leaves such things as disability behind on the beach.
Sailing is one of a few sports that are truly equal; the wind, the tide and the waves are the same for everyone, as are the skills needed to cruise or race a yacht or a dinghy.
Sailboat racing is a sport that is demanding and can be played on equal terms with able-bodied competitors. Once afloat, it is hard to tell whether the helmsman is able-bodied or disabled, whilst ashore able-bodied club mates think it a privilege to help a good sailor with launching and retrieval of the boat.
If you are new to sailing, make contact with your local Challenger group and they will let you have a try to see if you like it before you commit yourself. Most groups can lend you weatherproof clothing and life jackets for your first sail. If you are already a sailor and want to cruise or just mess about in boats you will find the Challenger to be safe, satisfying and easy to use. For anyone who would like to start racing, the Challenger has a sparkling performance and fits well into most club mixed racing dinghy fleets.
